Figure Skating
Dear Frankie...I am going to tell you all about Figure Skating. Figure Skating was an Winter sport before there was an Olympic Winter Games. Ice dancing joined the Olympics Winter Games in 1976. Figure skating first appeared at the London 1908 Olympic Games. Canada has won 24 medals in total for figure skating. They have won 7 gold medals, 10 silver medals and 7 bronze medals. One figure skating athlete in Evan Lusacek. He has placed 3rd six times, placed 1st 5 times and 2nd place 4 times. By Rachel
Bobsleigh
Dear Frankie...I am going to tell you more about the bobsleigh. There are three Olympic sports that are sliding sports. They are the blobsleigh, skeleton, and the luge. They started back 700 years ago when people used a narrow platform to slide on snow or ice. 150 years ago, they made racing sleds to go down long and twisting tracks. Wheelchair curling
Dear Frankie...I am going to tell you all about Wheelchair Curling. Wheelchair Curling is new Paralympic sport. Men and women play in this sport. They play in teams. The wheelchair can NOT move when they throw. The thing they throw is called a rock. If you throw the rock too far, you lose the whole game! Canada won gold in 2006 at Torino. Ice Sledge Hockey
Dear Frankie...Did you know that Ice sledge hockey was invented in Sweden in early 1990? The Swedes too two ice hockey skates and built a frame called a sledge which the athletes sit on. Only people with permanently injured leg(s) can play ice sledge hockey. In 2006, Canada won a gold medal at the Torino games. Paul Rosen is a gold and silver medalist. Skeleton
Dear Frankie...I am going to tell you more about the Skeleton. The Skeleton is a cool game like the luge but in the luge you can have 2 people on the sleigh. In the Skeleton, you hold the sleigh and ride it on ice. I think it would be awesome to try it. Duff Gibson won a gold medal for Canada. He won the gold at the 2006 Winter Olympics. Snowboarding
Dear Frankie..I am going to tell you more about snowboarding. Snowboarding combines surfing, skateboarding and skiing. Snowboarders perform one at a time and they do a routine of acrobatic jumps. Canada has a lot of snowboarders. Ross Reglianati won a medal in snowboarding for Canada. Drew Neilson was a gold medal at the World Cup in 1997. He is a still a world cup competitor. By Robin
Speed Skating and Ski Jumping
Dear Frankie..I am going to tell you about Speed skating and ski jumping. The first ski jumper jumped in 1809! The top 8 teams from the first round compete in the 2nd round. Ski jumpers can reach speeds of up to 95 miles an hour! American speed skater Chad Hedric won a medal of every color in 2006 Torino Olympics Games. Dear Frankie..I am going to tell you all about Ice Hockey. Most hockey games are played by men but women can also play in the Olympics. Hockey got its name from the French word "hocquet" which means stick. How does Hockey work? They have 6 players on each team as a time, or shift. Each team has to chase the puck and to try and score. Hockey is like roller blading and chasing a ball with a stick. Canada won an Olympic Gold Medal in Torino. Jennifer Bottler is a three time Olympian for the Canada in hockey. By Jad
